Understanding a policy you bought yourself

If you bought your dental policy yourself rather than getting it through work, a few features are worth understanding before you schedule treatment:

Waiting periods — some policies cover preventive care right away but phase in coverage for other treatment over time
Annual maximum — the most the policy pays each benefit year
Frequency limits — how often cleanings, X-rays and exams are covered
Replacement rules — some policies limit coverage for replacing an existing crown, bridge or denture

Timing treatment around your coverage

Give us your member ID and we'll check which of these apply to you. If a recommended treatment isn't urgent and your coverage for it begins soon, we may suggest waiting — and we'll say so plainly. Problems that can't wait, like a toothache or broken tooth, we treat promptly and explain your cost first.

Meanwhile, preventive care — typically covered at or near 100% on most PPO plans — keeps small problems small. Regular exams are also when we screen for oral cancer.

Insurance policy or membership plan?

Some patients compare their individual policy with our in-house membership plan. The membership plan isn't insurance: for $295 a year (adults), it covers two exams with routine X-rays, two cleanings and an emergency exam, plus 10% off other procedures, with no deductible, no annual maximum and no wait to start. Implants and orthodontics are excluded.
