Why regular dentures slip — and how implants fix it
A traditional denture stays in with suction and adhesive. Lower dentures are especially hard, because the tongue and cheeks constantly push against them. On top of that, the jawbone under a denture slowly shrinks once the teeth are gone, so a denture that fit well at first gets looser every year.
Snap-in dentures, also called implant overdentures, solve this by anchoring the denture to implants placed in the jaw. Small attachments on the underside of the denture click onto matching fittings on the implants. The denture stays steady while you chew and speak, and the implants help preserve the bone they sit in.
Snap-in vs. traditional dentures
Here's what changes for most people who switch:
- Stability — no rocking or dropping when you bite into an apple or laugh.
- Chewing — you can usually eat a wider range of foods with more force.
- Speech — less clicking and fewer adjustments mid-sentence.
- No adhesive — nothing to apply in the morning or scrub off at night.
- Less coverage — an upper snap-in denture can often be designed without covering the roof of your mouth, which many people find more comfortable and better for tasting food.
- Bone preservation — implants stimulate the jaw in a way a denture resting on the gums can't.

Are you a candidate for Snap-In Dentures Howell?
Most adults who are missing all their teeth in one or both arches can be considered. We look at four things during your consultation: the health of your gums and any remaining teeth, the amount of bone available (checked with digital X-rays), your medical history, and how comfortable you are with daily cleaning and regular checkups.
If you've worn dentures for years and the bone has thinned, that doesn't automatically rule you out. Bone can often be rebuilt with a bone graft done in our own office before the implants go in.
How many implants you'll need
A lower snap-in denture is often held by two implants; an upper denture usually needs more because the bone there is softer. Some patients choose additional implants per arch for extra stability. The right number depends on your bone and bite, and we'll explain our recommendation at the consultation.
If you would rather have teeth that don't come out at all, ask about All-on-4. It uses four to six implants to support a fixed arch with final teeth made from zirconia. Compare options on our dental implants page.

The treatment timeline
From start to finish, snap-in dentures typically take around six months. The main stages are:
- Extractions and implant placement — any remaining teeth that can't be kept are removed, and the implants are placed in the jaw. Sedation options are available.
- Check-up the next day — a follow-up visit, usually the day after surgery, to check healing and the fit of your denture.
- Healing (at least about four months) — the bone bonds to the implants. You wear a denture throughout, and we add soft liners as your gums change shape so it stays comfortable.
- Uncovering — a minor procedure exposes the implants and places healing caps that shape the gum.
- Attaching the denture — the snap fittings are connected and your denture is fitted to click securely into place, usually in one visit.
Who does the work, and what it costs
Dr. Abraham Y Husney holds a Diplomat Certificate of Completion from a Dental Implant Surgical Seminar, and extractions, grafting, implant placement and the final denture are all handled in our Howell office.
Cost depends on the number of implants, any extractions or grafting, and the denture design, so you'll receive a written, itemized estimate after your consultation. See our implant cost guide for the details, and ask about in-house and third-party financing. Book online or call (732) 751-4028.
