Why prevention is the smartest dental spending
Most dental problems are silent at first. A small cavity, early gum inflammation or a cracked filling rarely hurts until it has grown into something that needs a crown, a root canal or an extraction. A checkup every six months is how those problems get found while a simple fix still works.
Prevention is also the least expensive dentistry there is. Many PPO plans cover routine exams and cleanings at or near 100%, though every plan is different. Two short visits a year cost far less — in money and time — than treating what grows when they're skipped.
What happens at a checkup with our Preventive Dentist Howell team
A routine visit follows the same clear sequence:
- Health review — any changes in medications or conditions, since many affect the mouth (dry mouth from medication is a common cause of new cavities).
- Digital X-rays when due — they reveal decay between teeth and below the gumline, with up to 80% less radiation than traditional film.
- Professional cleaning — removes hardened tartar that brushing can't, then polishes away surface stains. More about cleanings.
- Gum check — measuring the pockets around each tooth to spot gum disease early.
- Dentist's exam — every tooth, filling and crown, plus your bite and jaw joints. Intraoral camera photos let you see what we see.
- Oral cancer screening — a look and feel of the tongue, cheeks, throat and neck for anything unusual.
- A plain-language summary — what's healthy, what to watch, and anything that needs treatment, with costs in writing.
Extra protection for higher-risk teeth
Some teeth need more than brushing and cleanings. Sealants are a thin coating painted into the deep grooves of back molars, where toothbrush bristles can't reach; they're especially useful for children once their permanent molars come in. Professional fluoride strengthens enamel and can help reverse very early weak spots before they become cavities.
For adults who grind their teeth or play contact sports, a custom night guard or mouthguard protects teeth and restorations from cracking. We'll recommend these only when your exam shows a reason for them.
Small problems we catch early
When a checkup does find something, it's usually minor. A small cavity can be fixed with a tooth-colored filling in one short visit. Early gum inflammation often improves with a more thorough cleaning and better home care. A chipped filling can be replaced before the tooth underneath cracks.
Wait a year or two and the same issues can need a crown, a root canal or periodontal treatment. That's the difference prevention makes: smaller treatment, smaller bills, and fewer emergencies.
