How Invisalign straightens teeth
Invisalign® uses a series of thin, clear plastic aligners, each one shaped slightly differently from the last. Wearing them moves your teeth a small, planned amount at a time. You switch to a new set every one to two weeks, and you can take them out to eat, brush and floss.
Because there are no brackets or wires, there's nothing to break, nothing to poke your cheeks, and no list of foods to avoid. The trade-off is discipline: aligners only work when they're in, so plan on wearing them about 20 to 22 hours a day.
Living with aligners day to day
Take the aligners out for meals and for any drink other than plain water, then brush before putting them back in. Food or sugary drinks trapped under a tray sit against your teeth for hours, which raises the risk of cavities.
Rinse the aligners whenever you remove them and clean them gently once a day. Keep the case with you; most lost aligners are wrapped in a napkin at a restaurant. If a tray cracks or goes missing, call us so we can tell you whether to move to the next set or wait for a replacement.
What clear aligners can correct
Invisalign treats many of the same problems as braces. Common reasons patients come to us include:
- Crowded or overlapping teeth that are hard to clean
- Gaps between teeth
- Overbites, underbites and crossbites, in many cases
- Teeth that shifted after braces when retainers weren't worn
- Uneven front teeth before veneers or bonding, as part of a cosmetic plan
Your free consultation with our Invisalign Dentist Howell team
Your first visit is complimentary. We examine your teeth and gums first, because aligners should only go on a healthy mouth; any cavities or gum problems are treated before tooth movement begins.
Next, a digital 3D scan replaces the gooey impressions many people remember from braces. From that scan we create a 3D preview showing how your teeth are planned to move, step by step, to the final result. You can see the outcome before you commit, ask about timing and cost, and decide with no pressure.
From first aligner to retainer
Once you approve the plan, your custom aligners are made. Treatment then follows a simple rhythm:
- Wear each set for one to two weeks, about 20–22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean your teeth.
- Check in every six to eight weeks so we can confirm your teeth are tracking to plan. You'll usually receive several sets at a time.
- Finish in about 6 to 18 months for most cases; simpler corrections can be quicker and complex ones longer.
- Wear a retainer afterward. Teeth naturally try to drift back, so a custom retainer keeps your result in place. It can also double as a tray for take-home whitening.
Invisalign for kids, teens and adults
We offer Invisalign® for children, teenagers and adults. For teens, aligners are easier to keep clean than braces and won't break during sports. For adults, they straighten teeth without the look of metal at work.
Because we're also your family dentist, cleanings and checkups continue at the same office during treatment, and the same team that knows your teeth tracks your progress. Our Sunday hours, 9 am to 3 pm, make check-ins easy to fit around school and work.
Cost and payment options
The fee depends on how much movement your teeth need and how long treatment will take, and we give you the exact price in writing at your free consultation. Some PPO plans include an orthodontic benefit that can apply to Invisalign; we're in-network with 32 PPO plans and will check yours.
In-house and third-party financing can spread treatment into monthly payments. Our membership plan doesn't cover orthodontics, so aligners are priced separately for members. Book your complimentary consultation online or call (732) 751-4028.
